Gulick, who had lived in Japan for many years, initiated a Friendship Doll Program to promote peace between the United States and Japan –‘to build a world neighborhood’ with children, two great nations, and dolls.’ It was this 1927 ‘Doll Plan’ which inspired Mukogawa Gakuin In Nishinomiya, Japan, and Mukogawa Fort Wright Institute in Spokane Washington to coordinate a similar venture of goodwill. Since 1993, doll ambassadors donated by the Japanese have been encouraging international friendships in a personal way. Long River Middle has received Hitomi, a doll of friendship to promote this lasting friendship between Japan & the USA. The grant writer for this program is Maria Avery.
